LEGO is a brand of plastic construction toys manufactured by Danish company The LEGO Group since 1949.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, LEGO grew to one of the largest toy brands in the world. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, LEGO's longevity was threatened by fierce competition from video game companies such as Nintendo and SEGA. This led LEGO to invest heavily in researching and developing digital technology, including the ultimately unreleased SPU Darwin (a database of every LEGO brick ever manufactured) and video games such as LEGO Island with partners such as Mindscape.
